Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge Clan. I had an issue identical to that of the OP. The car was going to the dealer anyway for other reasons so I asked them to check it out and mentioned the TB, typically they said nothing wrong with it (no doubt without actually looking). When I took it off it was easy to push it shut and it would stay shut until you gave it a pretty strong knock on the side.

Got a new one from Volvo for £67+VAT and it has been fine ever since.

excellent result , and a typical cause of these symptoms , although difficult to prove unless you do the test you did ...

I'm surprised the dealers are is struggling with this , its a known issue and has a bulletin on it .. Change the plastic throttle housing and see how it goes ...
There is a mod that can be done and most dealers should do it. File a little off the throttle flap on the TBH to allow it to close fully rather than replace it.

Question

hi,
I am new to volvos and diesels and have recently got an 07 2.0d c30. The starting is getting progressively more difficult now doesnt fire up on first crank and sometimes not on second when it starts its momentarily sort of lumpy. Reading this thread it sounds like the best thing is to replace the throttle casing and a low cost option (much needed!).
However as a novice is this easy to do?
Does anyone have a detailed how to or pics?
Any advice would be appreciated

thanks

It is easy to replace , 3 torx screws right in front of you once you have removed teh air inlet pipe ..
There is the mod to file the throttle flap but its not very professional , much like the volvo swirl throttle repair method !

Just to follow my earlier message up, the problem has started occurring again on my car. I took the throttle housing off and sure enough it can be pushed to stick closed again. It barely lasted 2000 miles! I will try and get it replaced by the dealer who sold it to me but will be looking at filing it if it happens again. I am surprised an improved part does not exist.

did you overtighten the main turbo hose clip and stress the body i wonder?
They wont re-engineer it now , the engine has been obsolete for a couple of years now .

Yeah I might have done, hard to gauge how tight to go with it. I've put it back on with the hose a bit further back from the main body and loosened it a bit - maybe with engine heat it will correct itself.
