Advertising on here and in other media will find its value in due course. Thanks for the advice chaps.

I'll post some pictures in the for sale section in the next few days. Be kind 😀
Sounds a cracker, good luck with the sale.

Come on Stuart! Has it sold?

I read a piece in one of the mags about an auto GL estate, one owner, 51k selling for £8.3k a day or two ago, so I am intrigued to see what yours went for in the end...

Hi Nick,

No, it's still for sale. I've had a good number of enquiries (and separate compliments from kind souls saying if they had the money they'd be knocking on my door), but no one has yet to view.

I'll let the advert run its course and will try and get along to the BKV this weekend - although I won't be entering it as that's a whole new level of cleanliness I can't bring myself to embark on. But hats off to those that do.

I thought I'd offer some observations, having sold my car for £7000 (advertised at £7995 or best offer).

It probably took me 2+ months to find a buyer (the first to actually visit).

I advertised on CarandClassic.co.uk twice (a free advert which led to the sale), Ebay twice (classified with best offer - which generated questions, commedians, and compliments).

I also advertised for one issue in the weekly classic car magazines (free - but no responses) and the classiccarsforsale web site (which seems little used and generated no responses).

I also took the car to the BKV Volvo, but didnt put it in the concours.

While I was prepared to wait for the right price, I have learnt the following from the experience:

Those who are at best half interested/able to fund the purchase will email, the more interested will phone, the keen ones will visit.

Dont be surprised if 80% of those who see the high price (mine was a very nice example which I think stood scrutiny) think you are mad or on chemicals. The rest will appreciate the condition, rarity (in that conditiion, mileage etc) and the extra cost in bringing a superficially similar example up to it). The issue is what proportion of the 20% have the funds now and want to buy now?

Its important to keep your nerve. With numerous emails and no visits, its easy to consider dropping the price (which no doubt buyers will still chip away at). I was played by one potential buyer, who kept finding reasons why the price needed to drop to suit his situation, keen though he was.

Ebay generated questions some of which were a tease. Asking questions which I felt were simply to waste my time / raise my hopes. While polite in my response, I didnt over elaborate and try and sell the car to them. The flip side is, some questions were from people who have little or no knowledge of Volvo 240s - so dont assume it will sell to an existing 240 enthusiast.

After a flurry of initial interest on CarandClassic and Ebay (1st month), interest died down. Rather than drop the price (I felt it was worth the asking pric), I repeated the adverts and also put it on Autotrader - which at the time had 2 other 240s for sale, one about the same price, the other £4k+ higher.
Not long afterwards, the sunny weather ended, which may have been a factor, as I received a firm offer from a motivated overseas buyer. Typically, having agreed a price subject to viewing, 2 other very interested potential buyers made contact - leaving me thinking I could have got near the full asking price had the timing of calls been different.

Ultimately you need to be flexible and realistic on the price you are prepared to take if you need the money/or space at the end of the day.

Would I use Carandclassic again? Yes. Autotrader? Yes - if you've got your advert and pricing right, it seems a wider campaign of advertisments work best.

Would I use Ebay? Yes but... Ebay generated lost of views and watchers. As well as lots of questions, I had 2 best offers. The first at £2500, the second at £2000. While I dismissed these as a joke, they showed up on my bid history - so not supportive of the price range I was seeking to achieve. Hence I would purchase a classified advert on ebay again, but I would think twice about an auction......as I felt there would be a high probablity that the jokers who bid at £2500 might decide to bid it up to £25000, just for a laugh.

Hope my observations are of help to others.
