Could be blocked fuel filter, blown intercooler, the varible vanes inside the turbo may be coked up and getting stuck (as happened with mine) split boost/ intercooler/ turbo pipes, leaky engine mounts, to name but a few culprits.

From my recent experience, is your battery dieing.
I got that message and limp mode. Went to Volvo Exeter for a diagnostic check (prior to putting in to my prefered indie to give him a clue) and £2000 turbo quote (more than the car's worth).
In the interim the battery died, replaced, problem went away.

IS your car cranking at a decent speed?

Boring answer, but you need to plug it into diagnostics. No point guessing with these cars.

not had a chance to get it plugged in yet, but the message went out on its own again for a bit then now back on, is this normal until I can get it plugged in to find out the problem.
