Diesel not switching off
Well I've done all the searching I can and have read many postings of diesels running poorly, not starting etc. My current problem is different. Mine won't stop!
When I switch off at the ignition the wngine keeps running although all other indications are normal, i.e. radio switches off and interior light come on. I have to stop it by deliberately stalling it in 2nd or 3rd gear, something which os not going to do it any good in the long run. I suspect a de***t solenoid somewhere in the system but, as there is no mention of the diesel enging in the Haynes book, can anyone advise? Or will I have to go out and buy a Renault book?

Hi mate,
Definatly the stop solonoid sticking open. Look on top of the pump, you are looking for a single wire conecting to a cylindrical solonid. The solinoid has hexagonal sides, remove it and check the spring and rubber sealing washer. Hope this helps? |

My old Renault did the same thing - not a 19 by any chance is it?
Funny when you turn her off and take the key out then engine keeps on running! I don't know what the cause was as I took it to the local mechanic - can't have been much as he only charged me a tenner. vipes

Hi KBB I do believe it is a Renault 19 engine. And thanks to Viper, I'ff out to the car wiv a big 'ammer - well a spanner anyway.

Did I give the wrong impression? I love my diesel 440. OK, it doesn't have the character of the 340 but is superbly comfortable, goes round corners like it's on rails (Si) and is frugal with the juice! I was just gonna tap the solenoid gently with the wooden stave to see if it could be loosened up a bit.
I've had look, done that and decided to leave it to the professionals for the sake of a few bob and fear of knackering a brilliant engine. 109K and no smoke. I would recommend one.

Well, cheap does not work it seems (internet ebay part).
The replacement £5 solenoid has packed up after 5 days of use and leaks diesel 'through' the termination at the top. Found this out when checking the engine bay this morning at my brothers place of employment. Pool of diesel on the floor under the car in about 20 seconds. Went to a recommended specialist down the road from his works and spent £30 on another Delphi one and now all is good and no leaks. |
