Scoobymolly it is a Renault Engine. 5w40 is the recommended oil and a high quality 5w40 is what helps prevent turbo failure. 10w40 is a permitted viscosity. 10w40 is usually semi synthetic and more prone to frying in the heat of the turbo, leaving more deposits which ruin the seals and inhibit the lubrication.
Mine is at 130k on its original turbo, no oil consumption, no blue smoke at any point. It has full service history and has been serviced with quality 5w40. It is tye exact same engine. Renault shipped them to Volvo who plonked them in the engine bay. Only difference is ancillary components such as airbox etc which volvo have shaped to the car, but these have nowt to do with the engine itself.
A 10w40 semi has no advantages whatsoever over a 5w40 fully, but a 5w40 fully has numerous advantages over a 10w40 semi. The 5w flows faster and allows easier turnover when cold, both are the same static viscosity when hot, which is -significantly- thinner than 5w cold never mind 10w.
The main reason for what you have experienced is regular servicing and Volvo owners as a rule being more responsible, not because you used the engine manufacturers second choice of oil 👍
