Default D5 cutting out

I agree with John Griffiths about the fuebox loose connection.
My 2001 D5 cut out in a similar way for a split second - dropped cruise - fans cut out etc. which went on ramdomly for quite a few months, occasionally dropping into limp mode for a few miles before taking off again.
It was traced with the help of PGI in Farnham to a loose connection on the fuse box - a known fault according to Volvo on early 5's
They say the circuit board may have been affected but to date mine is fine after 3000 + miles
I have the colour codes for the cables in question, not on me at present, but will post them later in the day
Hope this helps
Paul

Default D5 Cutting out

Ref my post of yesterday
The following info has solved the problem with my V70

TJ (may be a Volvo code)
Fuse Box Connector
Main Feed
Grey Connector
RED WIRE IS LOOSE
Terminal 7 1520
Engine Front 11B4
Remedy is to tighten connection / replace connector and or circuit board

Hope this helps

Status - Fixed

My friend who supplied the car took it on himself to get to the bottom of this problem and sort it one way or another and I am very pleased to say he had success.

After several hours of no success with the disgnostic computer and the threat of going to another volvo dealer, the dealer in Antrim did a "master Reset" to the ECU. The car has done hundreds of miles since then and hasn't had a problem since.

Hi all, My first time on here but sounds like my 02 V70 D5 SE (192K miles) has the same problem. Unfortunately Its getting worse and worse. Started cutting out every couple of weeks but now is about every 20 miles. Doesn't mater what speed I'm doing or weather using cruise control it cuts out, rev meter goes bonkers bouncing up and down and then sometimes restarts again within seconds, however the cruise control will then not re-engage untill ignition is turned of and re-started. No codes are showing down at the dealer but the problem is developing. Sometimes I get the message 'anti skid service required' and the latest fun is when it says 'start prevented'. If this message comes up I have to take the keys out the ignition then re-insert yet it starts again no problem. Having all this happen whilst overtaking on a busy motorway is not amusing. Help!

This sounds pretty similar to my problems. Is it worth suggesting to my dealer they look at the fusebox - does that seem to solve most peoples problems?

I can't believe it - I waggled the red wire into the fuse box and all my cutting out problems have vanished! I am so pleased to have it fixed but I have spent fortunes on so called diesel and Main Dealer experts. Thank you so much for your help, Best regards, Norman.

Default D5 cutting out

For years my 2006 V70 has suffered from cutting out without warning and will not immediately restart. After switching off completely and waiting for various clicks from the various control units (a couple of minutes) it then starts fine. This has usually occured shortly after leaving Spain and crossing into France on our twice yearly trips to Spain. I put this down to the sudden drop in temperature and humidity change causing water to release from the diesel, be sensed by the injectors and result in an engine shutdown. Yesterday I changed the left hand headlight bulb which requires the disconnection of the ECU (red plastic cam clips) to gain access to the headlight. I then had the cutting out problem big time. A spray of the ECU connectors with WD40 and everything was fine. So, yes my historic problem problem was a temperature and humidity change driven issue but causing a poor electrical connection not a fuel water content problem. I was misled by the sophisticated cam connectors thinking that they looked so over engineered they could not be a problem....so wrong!
