Default Burning smell when working hard

Hello. There is a smell of burning entering the cabin when working the 2003 V40 diesel hard. I noticed it when overtaking on the motorway and just now when going fast up a long hill. It almost smells of burning rubber. There are no issues with the tyres though! There is an oil leak at the joint in between the turbo and air intake on the throttle body as shown in the pics and this is pooling on a casing directly below. Seems to be leaking a bit from here as I wiped this clean yesterday. Anyone got any ideas if it's this or something else? Thanks.

OK can't upload pics. Something about a security token??

As the engine doesnt have a throttle body Im a bit puzzled as to where exactly you are referring to... It has an egr housing which is what I would most suspect to be confused with a throttle body, but it isnt directly in unison with the turbo...

There are a number of things which could cause your issue...

They normally leak between the plastic stop valve and the aluminium inlet manifold.

All it needs is a new rubber o'ring and torque the three bolts to 10nm (not that tight at all, just snug plus a tweak) with a bit of blue loctite.

It may just be blasting a bit of oily residue onto the exhaust.

That said, I would check your auxilliary drive belt and pulleys/alternator for signs of wear and also the exhaust/turbo/manifold doesn't have a hose or wire resting on it or near it.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is the EGR having looked at some pictures and we will try that O ring as a first port of call. Some other forum mentioned a leak from the turbo oil return leaking onto the exhaust. Has anyone any experience of that as well?

That is indeed one of the number of possibilities, well worth checking, as well as the oil feed. Also, have you cleaned or renewed the egr at any point? They clog really bad and can cause a serious restriction, this restriction can cause excess pressure on the feed side (of course this should be mitigated somewhat by the wastegate, if wastegate is functioning correctly, there is a little feed from egr housing to the map sensor which also clogs, thus the management doesnt know what pressure is being produced or gets a false reading)
