I have just checked my Fuelly logs and I've had 683 miles from a tank, the fuel light didn't come on so I assumed it wasn't working, just as well as the car took just over 63 litres! Almost exclusively motorway and A road driving in an S60 D5 185. The motorway driving involved a good 20 miles or so on the M6 into Birmingham and you can rarely get above 60mph at the best of times.

MY2004 D5 manual, 163bhp, pre-DPF. Trip from Warrington to Aboyne and back on one tank around 680 miles, still not on fuel warning light. That was mainly motorway and A roads except for the last leg over Cairn O' Mount via Fettercairn. I'd estimate I would probably have go around 750 miles to the tank brim to brim.
I regularly get 11+ miles per litre with mixed driving including some long motorway & A road stints to & from the destination when I'm away for the week which includes the A & B road mix from hotel to work location, so generally average between 48 & 52 mpg. If you really try, I believe mid to high 50's would be very possible. All measurements were real world brim to brim, OB trip is, like others, a little optimistic by around 3 - 4 mpg. Depends on your particular model spec (185, 163, DPF, manual/auto), but you could be getting 650 to 700 out of a tank, possibly more.

Volvo state these have a 70 litre tank however you can squeeze a hell of a lot more than that in if brimmed. Mine will easily do 150 miles and more before the gauge even starts to drop... and will regularly return 600 miles to a tank and nigh on 800 is possible on a steady cruise. Last fill, mine took 74 litres and the fuel light had only just come on so safe to say the stated 70 litre capacity is perhaps conservative!

You all got in before me lol, I had planned to brim the tank and run to empty next week (of course I keep a gallon can in the boot, because Volvo).
Our average MPG was sat at 43.4 when we bought the car last month, average speed 22mph. This had risen slowly to about 43.8 until a trip to Leeds and back, whereafter it was showing 45.9. Average speed still 22 strangely enough, must be a while since it was reset. Overall I'd say if the rule of thumb above holds true, 40+mpg on fairly mixed driving with a fair bit of town as well as C roads is more than acceptable in my book considering the S80 isn't exactly a supermini and the D5 163 performing the way it does.

after 8 years of driving the D5 the following comes to mind. "Normal driving" (like in UK) would expect about 730 miles before filling up (with some to spare). Driving Ms Daisy? well the most I've had is 860 before I chickened out and filled up. Fast Autobahn (say maxing out at 100 - 110 mph for 20 minutes each day) lets call it around 640 miles. Rev limit Autobahn (120 -130 for 20 mins each day) I can struggle to get 600.
I have a theory that brimming it and finding the longest slowest road out there with no traffic and good weather could see 1000 out the tank, doubt I will ever prove that though. |

D5-185 with 208k...now doing 400+ miles weekly on commute, mainly A roads and motorway..44mpg. Getting 640 from a tank and that took 66litres to fill so still had plenty in reserve. 70 litre tank seems pretty accurate for mine.

I was going to post a couple of pictures from our last trip to Sweden with our 2002 163 D5 Auto, but can't figure out how to do it without an web link.
The first picture was at night, about to leave our friends in northern Germany. It says "1135 miles to empty tank". The second one was taken after we got back home and parked up. That one says 55.8 MPG AVERAGE. The dash on the 2005 XC70 Geartronic I just bought read 55.2 when I picked it up. A week later it says 55.6.

2002 Euro 3 D5 5 speed manual.
The most from one tank is 950 miles and the highest Miles to Empty dash reading was over 1300 miles.
