Default Handbrake shoe spring keeps detaching

As the title says, one of my handbrake shoe springs keeps detaching and leaving the shoe loose. I just replaced the discs, pads and shoes with new springs.

I can only guess the backplate may need replacing as it's where the spring latches on to.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks
Paul

I'd have thought [stand to be corrected on this] that if the backplate is at fault it would either be because it was rusting out in the area the spring attaches to-but surely you'd have noticed this when doing the brake work-or there's some obstruction[build up of muck/crud]in that area that's stopping the spring seating correctly.Other than that has the spring gotten weak?Another thought just struck me,are the "hooks" on the spring ends different lengths?if so have you got the spring the right way round?if indeed you can install the a right or wrong way round.

I had the same problem when I replaced mine. I took the spring out and bent the end of it to give it a slight hook to give it a bit more grip into the back plate and it's been find since. Rubbish design though

See this thread.

Also, recommend using genuine Volvo Springs.

Thanks guys. I've refitted the shoes today, had to use the old spring though, as the new one had bent when the shoe loosened. I bent the hook of the springs when refitted to try to help it stay fixed to the backplate, so I'll see how long it lasts...

I had this exact issue, you'll notice on the backplate where the spring hooks onto the hub, there is a "thin" side and a "thick" side. Ensure you hook the spring over the thin side, else it will just keep destroying springs like it did mine!
