Oil Pressure
Hi Everyone
I am buying a Smiths Oil pressure gauge. I have a B20B with fast road cam. Does anyone know what pressure range I should be looking for on the dial and what's better...Bar or PSI. Cheers |

0 - 100 psi. Psi not bars. Bars out of place on an older classic and everybody in the UK, yourself included I'd guess, understands psi. A gauge with the needle reading from 7 to 5 o'clock would be my choice.

Looks OK and will do the job. As Derek says 7-5 full scale displacement is best as it provides a better range of movement.
You have one now but if you can find a 0-80psi gauge even better as it will offer an even greater scale of typical pressure found on the B18/20 engines. By that I mean the oil pressure operating range will take up a larger proportion of the gauge scale. Typical range cold approx 50-55psi but can be higher(or lower) Typical range hot above idle between 45-50psi Typical range hot at idle 40-45psi However, if you see pressure drop as low as 15-20psi at hot idle do not be too concerned. That is more than enough pressure to get to all the necessary places on the engine. Be more concerned if the pressure suddenly drops for no apparent reason. These are robust engines with good oil pumps. Regular oil changes with a good quality oil and OEM filter will keep it on song for many years Russ |
