Default Lower light control and tailgate/filler access panel

I find it a routine irritation that there does not appear to be any illumination of this panel which is impossible to see at night when you want to either open the tailgate or the fuel filler. Has anyone out there installed any sort of mod to provide some form of illumination of these two switches. I cannot understand why, in a car with every conceivable gadget, Volvo chose to leave these frequently used switches completely hidden in the dark. Anyone got any bright ideas of a simple mod to make the switches locatable in the dark?

Sorry, need to make my request a little more clear. The panel illuminates when the ignition is on so that you can see to open the fuel filler or the tailgate on the move, like you'd want to! But when you pull onto a fuel station forecourt and turn off the engine, as the law requires you to do, the switches go dark. They are not linked to the side or head lights but merely to the ignition. Could they not be linked also to the lights so that when the lights are on the switches are illuminated? Parking brake switch remains illuminated. Couldn't the other switches take their feed from the same source?

I've never found this to be a problem, but if it is, then the simplest solution must be to press the button the moment before you stop the engine, wouldn't it?

That's what I do, don't have tailgate opening but fuel filler is always opened before switching off and removing keys.

I understand what you are saying and this is a usable routine workaround but it does seem strange to me that two controls which are to be used when the car is stopped should not be illuminated after dark when the ignition is turned off while the electric parking brake operating button is. Can there be some safety issue of which I have not thought?

Well I'll stop worrying about it and use the workaround of opening the filler or the tailgate before turning of the engine. Thanks for info.
