just had a thought, if the turbo regulator is sticking is it worth a shout to spray wd40 all over it then use the mitty vac to try and free it.its worth a shout if its just sticking.

No Mike, I don't think so... All these parts are factory adjusted so I might end up with mismatching information on the ECM, that's my thought.

I understand and it's very appreciable, I'd like to save money on this....
I won't go further in troubleshooting. I try to find a second hand turbo, not much in France but I saw a few on ebay.uk. Just a question, my turbo part number is : 8653122 and many sold on ebay have different part number, do you think it could be a problem ? |

D5 VNT Governor Information
This post is really an excellent read, well done "outnumbered" .
I would like to find out why my V70 D5 is still behaving badly after replacing my bloated intercooler with a brand new one and blanking the egr. The car still smokes greyish under acelleration with a brief loss of power @1700rpm followed by a puff of black soot then back too whitey/grey smoke which disappears when cruising. Really hoping I don’t have to take my turbo off yet. I’ve done the vacuum test with a guage in line between turbo vane actuator and governor and get the same results as "FGX 318". In an attempt to understand and rule out the turbo governor valve, I’ve trawled the net and found information on how to test the valve:-(see attached pdf) Interesting to note that the valve should vent to atmosphere when the power connector is disconnected, which should destroy the vacuum totally. Im assuming that while the car is standing, the govenor valve gradually vents more air as revs increase. On my car, the turbos vane actuator moves smoothly and fully in one direction as soon as the car is started. and idling (full boost position ready for driving off?), as I rev the car without moving off, the arm gradually moves in the opposite direction. (Perhaps coz there’s no load measured on the engine and the car wants to avoid overboost, but I’m really not sure because I know my car isn,t behaving.) What I could do with is some one who has a d5 with zero boost issues, visually confirming that the vane arm will move as described and/or perform a vac test between the governor valve and turbo, which shows gradual acceloration/decelleration. Especially at the point where the Turbo Control Valve (The valve which operates the pads) kicks in @1700ish? Cheers |

hello Colzak,
Very interesting document you attached, thanks. I'm very busy at the moment and should be able to remove and inspect my turbo before the end of the week as I use my car daily and it goes limp mode everytime I reach 2400 rpm ! So boring.... I'll take pictures and give you the outcome. |

Hi 'fgx318'
Thanks for a prompt reply. I did wonder if your d5 was fixed since your last posting. I,m hoping I dont have to take my turbo off since the vane arm actuator appears to move freely and smoothly, but if everything else checks ok I suppose cleaning the turbo vanes is always an option. Just out of interest, does your volvo sound rattely like an old naturally aspirated diesel engine?, because I've heard other Volvo d5's , which sound much quieter than mine while idling and revving? |
