Is there an oil specification listed by volvo for use on their D5 engine?
a bit like mercedes have their own oil specs eg MB229.3
Jjust like to know for when i eventually get round to servicing the car, want to buy the right spec....and i'm too lazy to read the owners manual!
Reading the manual won't do any good anyway because it dosn't tell you the make.

The ONLY oil Volvo recommend is "SLX Professional Longtec for Volvo cars A5/B5 0W-30" (yes that is the full name) It is only available from Volvo main dealers and then only if you can give them the part no. You can get the part no. from Volvo customer support but tell them to ask technical for it. However it will cost about £100 per 5 litres this way.

Not all main dealers are using the correct oil but if you find one who is they may be prepared to fill you own container which may be a cheaper way to buy it.

However Millers oils make oil that meets the A5/B5 spec and costs £49 for 5 litres. If you use any other oil you won't get the mpg or extended service interval. Castrol say you can use Edge but you won't get the mpg or extended service interval.

As you may guess from this I have made extensive enquires about which is the correct oil to use in a D5 engine.

Castrol told me R-Tec is discontinued and superseded by "SLX Professional Longtec for Volvo cars A5/B5 0W-30" but as the dealers buy the oil in 1000 litre drums some may still be using R-Tec.

I found a very interesting article on the conflict between the oil companies and BMW which you can read here....http://www.ibmwr.org/otech/oilreport.html

Although it relates to BMW motorbike enginesI think the moral of the story is that you get what you pay for. Oil companies cut cost by cutting wear and anti corrosion additives and the latest oils may not give the best protection as they may have some other agenda to meet.

After I read the article I did my best to analyze the quantity of additives in the oils (although some manufactures were cagey when it came to publishing figures), and suprise, suprise, the Volvo recommended oil had the most and was the most expensive of those I could get figures for.

Did you really find it a suprise that an American web site that's an authorised Amsoil oil reatailer found the Amsoil oil "best"? They themselves said the Castrol wasn't suitable for the American 5 litre V8 they tested it in. Also the Castrol SLX and R versions they tested aren't available in this country. They're not on the Castrol technical data sheet list. So they're either old oils or the Americans have a different set of oils from Castrol.

Amsoil do make an oil that meets the A5/B5 spec though, but don't publish details of the addative package they put in it.

Not really! I didn't really read it in depth to be honest I just thought people may be interested in it. But it does show very different BHP figures." I know that could be down to temp or humidity but i still found it interesting. do many D5 owners use Mobil 1 ???
