I get the impression that quite a few do and I know at least one main dealer who does. It was a suprise to find it was true about the main dealers, even though I had been warned by perussell that some dealers wern't using the Volvo recommended oil.

I assume it's a cost issue, after all some only charge around £100 an hour so they have to make their profit somehow.

£100 an hour is that a joke???I've never used a dealer yet as I have only had the car about 2 months and I wont use them at that price. Any idea of the cost of an oil change at the dealers ??. I was quoted £42 at National using visco 7000 or something like that.

Apparently the labour charge at the BMW dealer in Canterbury is £148 + VAT per hour!

The one good thing about these ridiculous labour charges is that it leads to the rise of a lot of good dedicated non franchised garages where you really get a good personal service.

Default Oil Specification for D5

Essential you do read the manual or phone local Volvo dealer. Oil for D5 engine is highly specified given standard change intervals (lesser of 18,000 miles or 12 months).

For a 185bhp D5 the oil specification is: ACEA A5/B5 and 0w-30w viscosity.

Do be aware that Mobil 1 and Castrol are very different products in the USA to what they are in the UK. Phone them and ask, I did! Don't think that what these US companies supply to Old Limey' is superior to what they have at home against the stiff competion in the US market either.
Best 0w-30 oil in the UK is Amsoil and Motul IMHO. Mobil1 1 should be the minimum standard nowadsys with most of the Castrol range not showing except for Castrol Edge which is a good product.
£100 for 5L of oil from Volvo .....please get Amsoil with a club discount for 1/2 the price!

What do you base your opinion on amsoil ? Do you have any info on what quantity and type of adatives Amsoil puts in it's 0-30? I couldn't find any.

Edge isn't as good as the stuff Castrol makes for Volvo. Castrol tech dept. told me that... and you only have to look at the tech spec sheets to see anyway.

Amsoil continually comes out at the top under testing in the USA; the TSO 0w-30 is one of their flagship products and has never been bettered in testing that I am aware of. It is A5 / B5 and is longlife and fuel efficient. The TBN which is a measure of quantity of the expensive additives is greater than 12.1 ie high; its shown here http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/0w-30(2000).html. Given that they where the 1st Company to produce an APT certified synthetic oil and have resisted takeovers for over 30 years remaining independant and world leaders I would think they know a thing about oils.
I have contacted Castrol about the Volvo specific oil which was called Artec but is now known as Longtec; I was told that not only is it needed for 18,000 miles servicing but its available only at Volvo dealers at £88 per 4 Litres! The difference between this and Edge is that can last the 18,000 miles and is also fuel efficient..... (but is it an effecient use of your hard earned?)
So Castrol have convinced me that Edge wont go the course in the D5, that Volvo had Castrol have effectively stiched the volvo customers up with their volvo specific oil at £100+ per 5L and that Volvo owners deserve better than this kind of sharpe practice. IMHO of course.
Amsoil is an alternative; its an A5 / B5 fuel efficient longlife oil good for upto an advertised 25,000 miles. Claims like this have to be provable verifieble and independantly certified in the States or you get a big legal action against you. The 18,000 mile volvo service interval gives you a big margin to Amsoils 25,000 anyway, and at the club discount price its about half the Volvo stealers price!

I think you must have phoned Castrol because it's R-tec not Artec. I made the same mistake when I spoke to a main dealer, but I emailed Castrol so they put me right.

The problem I have with the tests I've seen with Amsoil is that the are all done on American engines as far as I can see. I'm not even sure you can get a diesel D5 engine in an XC90 there. They get the V8 and the T5 I think. I've seen the info you post a link to but it dosn't actually say what the adatives and quantities are, unlike Castrol. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Amsoil, just that I can't find out what it's adative package is so I can't compare it with Castrol which publishes it's contents. I agree wholeheartedly about the cost of the Volvo specific oil though. It must always be more expensive because it has more adatives than the other Castrol oils.
