I have some updates on this issue. I spoke to our local dealer back in Virginia, where we bought the car. They are will to take the engine apart, replace the pistons and rings of their own good will, given the known defect. I called Volvo UK back to see if they would be willing to compensate this. They said that their previous decision was their final decision and that they would not be willing to compensate for parts. Only 30% towards a complete engine replacement. Ombudsman emailed me to say that under the New Car Code, the manufacturer has no obligations towards a vehicle repairs outside of the warranty, even if we think it's a manufacturer's defect.

Excessive oil consumption?
Smoky exhaust? Blocked EGR cooler? Stuck EGR valve? Some internet research reveals that there is a well known and well documented design fault common to early D4 engines. The oil control rings in the pistons have oil return ways to allow oil back into the crank case. These are too small, are prone to blocking up so oil bypasses the rings, enters the combustion chamber and is burned with the fuel. This causes dirty combustion with excessive carbon accretion in the EGR cooler and EGR valve, which may stick in any position. This will also cause excessive oil consumption and there will be no evidence of any leaks anywhere. My D4 V70 is on its 4th EGR cooler at 125000 miles. No-one at the Volvo dealership (who have carried out all its servicing) has offered any explanation of the excessive oil consumption as this would implicate the company in a 'Latent Defect' case where thousands of vehicles should have been recalled and remedial works carried out. Hope this helps. pkj@mac.com |

In my book, an offer of 30% towards the cost of a new engine is an admission of responsibility and a lever to pull. Am I right in thinking that Virginia is Virginia in the USA and that the car would need to be shipped both ways? Not cheap. Perhaps I'm a little late with this, but have you contacted a motor magazine or motoring website for help? Similarly, recovery services such as The AA can sometimes help. Also, is this car British or American? If the latter, then have you spoken to Volvo in the USA? |
