Default Rich running n cut out

Hi all, just bought 240 estate from 1992. It’s spitting out black assume unbent fuel from exhaust, so I took the air filter out to see what occurred, n the spitting stopped. A new filter seems obvious but the old one wasn’t that dirty. The car runs reasonably well, slight misfiring, at speed it seems to want to cut out and ideas what’s going on, seems that some thing needs adjustment.

If taking the filter out made the engine better the filter must be faulty , it could be blocked with fine dust for what ever reason , Give it It brief run without the air filter ...
Fuel pressure issues spring to mind with those symptoms too ...
