Default XC90 R-Design Pro

Hello, I’m looking at the XC90 as the next family bus, probably new as I’m a bit fussy on spec. T8 is (I think) out of budget so it’ll probably be one of the B5 mild-hybrids (petrol or diesel).

Anyone got any experience here and can recommend one over the other? My initial thought is diesel, it’s a big heavy SUV after all but I haven’t driven the petrol version yet to compare.

Also, I’ve read somewhere the earlier D5 engined cars suffered from a sluggish gearbox at times, particularly when rolling to a junction and then wanting to pull out. Does anyone know if the B5 cars suffer from the same problem?

Thanks

I bought one approved used 2 months ago on a 69 plate. Love it. Big car with adequate performance and reasonable economy. No issues with sluggish gearbox.Mine is pretty much fully loaded, love the B&W sound system.

So, the term 'sluggish' is all relative to what the user is used to. None of the Volvo auto boxes (even with the Polestar Optimisation) are as swift, slick or quick witted as a modern dual clutch or ZF auto as used by BMW, Audi etc however, having the polestar Optimisation software installed does make the gearbox much better than in standard form.
If you have little/no experience with these other Auto boxes then you will likely have no complaints with the Volvo gearbox.

I'd be coming from an Audi s-tronic box, which also has to "think" before responding to throttle inputs.

Is Polestar Optimisation available for the B5 mild-hybrids?

Nearly all 8 speed auto gearboxes have to think about what gear to go up or down to occasionally, they have too many close ratios to choose from, its a compromise for economy, 6 speed boxes are better and less dithery, Volvo box is no worse than most 8 speed boxes. I have never had any problems, only an occasional dither but never been caught short when pulling out at junctions or roundabouts.
