I think these administration costs are excessive, just for pressing a few buttons on a computer.

So I just forked out another £26 admin charge to update my policy. However, surprisingly, my Polestar engine power increase only cost a fiver for the next three months until my policy comes up for renewal.

That works out to £20 a year so a lot less that what I was told a couple of weeks ago.

Now the actual performance increase is 10.5% (181hp to 200hp). Insurance companies have strange banding ranges: 0-10%, 11-20%, etc.

So an increase of 10.5% doesn't really fall into any of the bands! But the agent put it into the 0-10% band as it can't really go into the 11-20% band. I made sure they put a note on the policy that I've told them it's a 10.5% power increase.

They don't seem to care about the hard numbers. They're just interested in the percentage increase in peak power.

So, I'm a little annoyed at having spent another £26 to get my policy changed, but then the insurance surcharge for Polestar was a lot less than I was expecting.

You would get charged the £26 for any changes to your policy, even change of address.
At least you're premium increase is less than you expected.

Default Saga insurance won't cover polestar optimisation

Just booked my V60 in for the polestar optimisation .... then contacted Saga and was told NONE of their underwriters would cover this ... they wouldn't even give a figure for extra on the premium ...so had to cancel!!! ... my insurance isn't due for renewal until May 22 so I might as well wait until then ... but I have to say I was shocked that the wouldn't cover a factory installed software update.

This is the total opposite to what I was told!, I'm with Saga and I called them when i had my Polestar done on my S60 T8, actually a couple of days before, the performance gain is so small they said it will make no impact on the price, the percentage increase is tiny, 389 to 405bhp. I also mentioned that Volvo call it an optimisation and done at Volvo dealer, they assured me that a note had been added to my file and that all calls were recorded should there be any disputes.

I would call them again and speak to someone else, they called a underwriter while I was on the phone, all done in 10 minutes.

Just renewed yesterday with LV= and declared the Polestar upgrade but it did not seem to increase the price

I had a XC70 that had been P*'d, both the previous owner and myself used Aviva at the time, he was charged an extra £20, I wasn't charged anything. I think his cost was probably an admin fee as it was added mid term.

But I'm just about to tell Aviva to sod off, their renewal on my XC60 is +£120 despite no claims or penalty points, Direct Line are £200 cheaper for like for like cover. I know if I ring them they will match it, they always have, but on principle I'm going to move this year.

Absolutely. Under A.B.I. rules the charge is only supposed to cover the actual cost of changes, and is not supposed to be used as a profit making opportunity in their own right.

Of course, most insurers ignore that because they know that virtually no one knows the manadatory guidance so they can rake it in.

Insurers are up there with solicitors and real estate agents in my book. Despite what they say the ultimate price has not a great deal to do with genuine 'risk', and more to do with the customers perceived willingness and ability to lay as much as they can squeeze out of them.

LV initially charged me £20 extra for the remaining 7 months on my insurance.
Come renewal I shopped around, found I could save around £20.
Then went back to LV, haggled and paid £28 less than the year before.
Result!
