Default volvo v40 abs hub bearing replacement

Hi all, I was wondering if you can help me out with some information,
My ABS lights came on a few weeks back and I had it diagnosed and the guy said if it comes back on it needs an ABS change on the rear driver side. And of course, it came back on. After I left to change the ABS calls me that it has a mechanical failure and that the whole hub bearing needs replacing, also said that only VOLVO manufacture this and it will cost around 400£. Now I am looking for advice if this price is correct or should I take it to somebody else for a second opinion. Any advice would be appreciated

Usually, it is the sensor that fails, most commonly because of damage to the wiring, as it is fairly exposed under the car. On a few rarer occasions, it may be a broken ABS ring, but this mostly happens, when someone takes the rear hub apartment and accidentally breaks it.

I find it a bit surprising, that the whole hub requires replacing. Unless if the mechanic has spotted something specific that is concerning, I would be surprised that the whole things needs replacing.

I am not much of a mechanic that's why I am asking if anybody can give me some ideas on what to do? Maybe get a second opinion. He did mention something about the ABS ring but I don't recall exactly what. I do know him saying the whole hub needs replacing

You don't give the age of the car, but assume it is a classic V40 1996 -2004. New hubs are readily available, I have recently changed one on mine , fitted a Meyle hub and was around £100. The abs ring needs changing over from the old hub to the new one, so if yours is no good you will need a new ring. A very simple job to do and any competent spanner monkey would have it done before he has had a chance to turn the radio on and make a cuppa.

Oh..,. In that case, this is the wrong section. This is for the 1996-2004 S40 and V40 models. No idea what the new V40 Huns are like and what can go wrong with them

You need to post in the correct forum as this only deals with the classic S/V40 up to 2004.

Gatos beat me to it😀

Scroll down to V40/XC '12 - 17 General and post the query there, someone will be along with the correct advice.
