Tyres, what else.
Looking for board advice re winter tyres, for 05 xc70. That'd be 215/16/65.
Preparing for drive in conditions as per photo, 3k miles round trip, so no multiseason tyres, proper winter. Budget for 4, up to £500. Thanking in advance. (I do have extra set of rims, so changing back to summer won't be an issue)

Nokian are kings of winter and 3 season+ tyres. Hancook also worth a look.
Most proper winter tyres are happy upto +7c, but so long as you don't run them above those temps they'll last plenty long enough. |

I found out that Uniroyal rainsport work excellent on V70, after being branded utter crap by "light vehicle" drivers. That is golf, Corsa, etc. This test was done with use of a golf. I hope it's understandable that I have some reservations will the tyres perform same on a Volvo..

BTW I've never seen Rainsports described thus - many MX5 drivers were using them as summers/all year tyres, having migrated from Toyos which used to be the default. |

My daughter has Nokian Weatherproof all season on her XC70. 235/50 R18 101V XL. Work very well for her.

Certainly on our XC90s I've run Cross climates, Nokian Weatherproof, and latterly Hankook Kimergy 4S2s.
All have been good with not a great deal to choose between them, but the Ha kooks just shade ahead. They perform as well as the others in the varied conditions, are quieter, and (were) slightly cheaper. They are all 3 Peaks Snow rated, and perform as well in the snow as all but the very best snow - not winter - tyres, so there is little benefit to be gained these days from dedicated snow boots. The conditions you show are quite mild - I regularly used to participate in extreme weather engine testing in northern Finland, a different league - and well within the abilities of 3m Peaks all weather tyres, and won't leave you feeling like you're driving on marbles when the snow disappears.

Also very much worth a look are the Cooper Discoverer Winter (which I run all year round on my XC60) or if you really are going ice exploring the Cooper WeatherMaster WSC (which I run all year round on my Ford Ranger).
They're very good in snow and ice, and good in all other conditions, also good value. The Winters on my XC60 have done 38k and still have 5-6mm tread left (I'll scrap them when they get to 4) so that's debunked the myth that running winter tyres in summer causes rapid wear.

Have a look at https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/...-Tyre-Test.htm for some impartial and semi-scientific advice/reviews. I've been a follower of theirs for a while and bought my current tyres, Hankook K4S2s, as a result and everything they said is correct - they're a superb tyre and are particularly good in the cold, rain, ice and light snow (all I have experienced).
As a result, I'd suggest you also consider the Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen3 which is said to be the best snow biased all season tyre (although I've had no issues with my Hankooks in light snow/ice). Otherwise the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 seems to be the best snow tyre if you are sure you need a full on snow tyre?
