Default Engine issues 2006 2.4D5

Hi all,

Just acquired a 2006 XC90. Has a few advisories on the last MOT so i took it to my mechanic to have a look.
He instantly said there's an issue with the engine as it sounds really rough. I took it to the local indie volvo garage who said the same thing and quoted £500 to strip the engine to diagnose it. They couldn't give me any idea what could be wrong, just that there's an issue. Also said its pointless putting a diagnostic test on it.

I've stripped the throttle body and EGR today and they were really filthy. I've cleaned them and refitted. Also i've done the glove test on the oil filler and it's inflating. Is this normal?

I've also noticed that the ECR has been replaced.

I have the following codes on a cheap OBD reader
P0531 AC re-fridge pressure sensor
P0601 Engine control module memory check sum error
P0101 Mass air flow range performance problem - this came on the other day after a bit of hard driving but has since cleared. It seems like a new one has been installed recently.

Any ideas where i can go from here?

Thanks

Pete

An ECM checksum error can occur if the ECM has had a remap.

Mine has, and so I have this error as a permanent error. But my engine has run fine for the last 10 years with the remap

Obviously, an AC system error won't be the primary problem for your car.

The amount of coked by carbon deposits is a concern. Getting that EGR cleaned is the right thing to do.

You'll also have carbon all through the intake manifold, which will need to come off and be cleaned as well. Which means disconnecting fuel lines.

Thanks for your reply. The intake manifold clean up is next on my list. What can cause this much build up? It's only supposed to have 80k miles on it.

Also if you take the inlet manifold off check the swirl flaps they may need replacing, they could be partly to blame for the carbon build up. just did this job on my 2006 d5 and my throttle body was as bad is yours. also it worth checking all the pipes for leaks. ian

A 2006 with 80k miles? That's 80000 miles in 15 years = 5333 miles per year.

That's likely the problem. Less used car = more short journeys = more fuel burned = more time with cold engine = more soot buildup = EGR issues sooner rather than later.

A car used more often has a engine that spends more time at normal temperatures (90°C) and consequently less carbon buildup.

Anyway, clean it all up, and go from there.

It may help you to know that MANY diesel cars with EGR valves suffer this issue. All makes, all models. Garages make good money from EGR and intake manifold de-coking and cleaning.

And make sure you do a decent 1hr drive every tank of fuel to ensure DPF gets a chance to regen properly.

Is this the swirl flaps motor here with the pink marks? Looks like it has a bodge job to me with the wire.
Should i be replacing this too or just the link. Any way it can be tested.

That is the motor that and arm that controls the swirl flaps. the flaps are under the air intake cover on top of the head under the injection pipes.
it would be better to leave the arm with the wire round it alone. They do tend to fall off.

Sounds like you have a few issues and a car, albeit low mileage, that has been maintained by Bodge it & Scarper Ltd for a few years. That's not a bad things though as you're clear not adverse to getting your hands dirty, asking for help and getting stuck in. It will be very satisfying when you get it running better.

I don't agree there is no point in putting it on diagnostics - within VIDA (Volvo's own diagnostic) there is a power balance check where you can shut down the injector on individual cylinders to see the impact on RPM and running - this can help diagnose if you have an injector spray pattern or cylinder compression issue. It won't likely tell you exactly what it wrong, but you it might tell you where to start and that might not be spending £500 to strip an engine to be told it was fine and they need another £500 to reassemble it or it's scrap...

Yes, that looks like someone has tried to tighten up the arm so that it doesn;t pop off. I'd leave it like that tbh if it's working. Why on earth is it pink on there though? Second hand part? Is it working?

Perfect, thanks guys. I'll strip the intake and give it a clean and get it booked in for diagnostics to see what comes back.
