proportioning valve(?)
Hello, I have a '74 164e and my brakes are really hard to actuate, my mechanic says I need a new distribution or proportioning valve, I've followed all the links posted to used and new parts distributors, has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks for your time. -Ron

Ronster.
You say the brakes are hard to push but do they work the same as before? I assume a fault in the proportioning valve would upset the balance of the front / rear bias, therefore would your rear brakes lock up all the time or not work at all. I did once have a problem with a similar result in faults and it was the rod going into the back of the servo being poorly adjusted. As I had taken the servo off there was no one to blame. This could be worth looking at if the brake system has been removed. Regards Mike. |

first things first check the brake booster,Sit in car without motor running pump the brake pedal until it goes rock hard hold the foot on the pedal start the car the pedal should drop telling you you have vacuum assist if not faulty booster very unusual for a faulty valve leaking yes pressure not regards John

When I bought my 164, the brakes had no assistance from the servo (or booster - same thing, depends where you live what you call it). I drove it 800 miles home from Germany like that, so I there was lots of anticipation and leg-ache involved. A garage over there had tried to fix it but failed; they had put on a new master cylinder and other components. I fixed it in 3 minutes when I got home. The non-return valve in the vacuum pipe to the servo had been refitted the wrong way round. Worth checking that, as it's easy and free! John |
