Sm & Allan ATF 3309 Synthetic Automatdaic Transmission Fluid
I want to change ATF for XC90 D5 2010 as it has done 95K and I have no clue if it been ever changed!
There are a few options to buy fluid. Volvo packing - expensive. Mobil ATF 3309 Smith & Allan ATF 3309 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid Last 2 are cheaper than one in Volvo packing and almost similar price per litre. However, buying directly from Smith & Allan is reasonably more cheaper. They all have same spec, JWS 3309. Now question is that though they are of same spec but price is different a lot, is it okay to use one from Smith & Allan? Is this different in any way from other 2 mentioned? Please advise. Thanks in advance. |

Smith and Allan are a long established company pretty close to me.
As soon as I bought my 07 XC90 I ordered 20 ltrs from S&A and have done several sump dumps rather than the Gibbons method. Either method will work it's down to personal preference. There have been no ill effects on my car with this oil in the transmission nor am I expecting any. Hope this helps.

I used them earlier this year to supply the oil so I could change my gearbox fluid (2013 XC90 roughly same mileage as yours). Used the full flush method and glad I did - OMG the oil was nearly black when I started and towards the end became a lovely ruby red. I am sure I caught mine just in time as the gear change was still smooth with the odd clunk going into to drive or reverse. Since doing flush gearbox still silky smooth but with the reassurance that I have fresh oil in there.

Thanks to you both, it gives me enough assurance to go ahead and change ATF.
Going to order 2 * 5L = 10L for almost 3 cycles and hoping that should be good enough for a couple of years. Cheers, |

I've had no ill effects however after 5k km on 3309. My understanding the switch away from 3309 was for US CAFE ratings "lifetime transmission fluid". An equivalent fluid to AW-1 is Toyota's Type WS fluid. I've managed to get Type WS cheaper than Mobil 3309, so next change I'll switch to that (and use it on my XC60). There is a Volvo TJ that documents the change in detail with the production # when the fluid changed. I've documented my findings here in detail for those who are curious: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthr...AW-1-(JWS-3324)
