K blocks have the improved crankshaft with thrust bearing moved to the rear main and larger main bearings. K blocks were introduced as a running change in the 1988 model year. The 13mm connecting rods were introduced as a running change, to the K block B230s, in the 1989 model year.

The L blocks have piston oil squirters, and can also be identified by the curved tooth timing belt. They have the 13mm connecting rods introduced to the K blocks.
