Default C30 2011 2.0D D3 - Fuel Consumption & Whistling

Hi,

Someone has this engine to tell me about the MPG?

I bought this car a few weeks ago and the MPG is currently 38.4MPG.
Is this normal? I was waiting for a bit more (~45MPG). I use the car in city, with many roundabouts...

Also, when I accelerate the car, i can hear some whistling... On Volvo Services they told that is normal in this car, someone with the same car and the same whistle?

Thanks!

Same engine, in your car's bigger & heavier sister (or brother).

MPG sounds about right for constant accelerate, brake, roundabout, repeat.
Lighter acceleration and lift off the throttle long before having to brake for a roundabout will improve it.

No whistle here, I can barely hear the turbo. I could hear it a bit on the previous D5 (same engine, longer stroke), maybe the turbo was different on that but still no whistle. I might be asking for a second opinion on that in your shoes.

Thanks for the reply and tips Proghound!

Following your tips today, I noticed some MPG improves.
The next step will be moving to another city

I found a whistle just like the one in my car:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5JH1bDj_nA
at 0:15 you can hear the whistling.

It only happens when I push a bit more for the engine, like entring on the roundabouts in "full acceleration" and 1st gear.

Maybe because my previous car was a Opel Corsa 1.3 70cv, I'm not used to the double of HP
I'll ask for a second opinion anyway.

Thank you again!

I have a 2012 C30 D3 mine normally hovers around 45mpg on my 6 mile commute, it may depend when the average mpg was last reset.

I normally reset mine before I go on a long drive generally it will go up to 47/49mpg, then generally over the next few weeks it will settle back to around 45mpg, the last month my commute has got far worse for taffic due to road closure, and its reduced to high 43's but thats the lowest I've seen.

I don't get any whistling noise.

scoobysn7x, even if you accelerate a bit more?
I can only hear the sound with the windows open.

43 seems to be a more reasonable value compared to my 38...
Now it's in 41s, but with a super careful driving...

this is the whistle (>16 seg).

At least I'm not the only one... Maybe you need to check your car, is too economic xD

My D5 whistles a bit under boost, tbh I believe its the turbo spooling up!

Can only be heard with the window down mind you.
