It did have its problems with software early on, especially in the Jeep where it was first used. It is also rather different to most torque convertor automatics [which it is] in that it has dog clutches [like a motorbike] in two gearshift points. I forget which ratios they are. This may result in a bit of a delay and rough change between those ratios unless the driver eases the engine torque as the change is made. My impression was that the software, especially on LR vehicles, meant that it now behaved very acceptably and I'm slightly disappointed to hear that yours was unsatisfactory. Having said all that, it now occurs to me that you might have had an early Disco Sport with the Ford engine and six speed auto? These are heavy on fuel if nothing else.

Nope it was a late 2016 car with the ingenium engine (with the associated diesel dilution) and the 9 speed box. It was truly dreadful, desperate to hold onto the highest gear possible at all costs so u coast up to a corner or roundaboat and try to accelerate away and ...... wait! Then a second later the dog clutches wake up, select a gear and you get a boot in your back. A real marmite gearbox, some had no problems, I and a few others on the DS forum had real issues

I would strongly advise you to think very very carefully before u buy a DS - it is not a premium car and has a number of fundamental design, engineering and build quality issues. Yes every car has issues but the number and severity of those on the DS was scary - the diesel dilution issue being the most severe of all. Have some time browsing round the forum at https://www.discosportforums.co.uk and you'll quickly see what I mean

From my experience the DS is a disappointment made worse by awful dealers.
I too wanted British, after 2 poor cars and a 3rd the dealer ordered to the wrong spec, I went to the Volvo dealer and haven’t looked back. |

I think part of the issue with JLR is that they are low down on the suppliers priority lists, for example BMW sell >2.5 million vehicles per year Landrover sell about 400,000, it is probably a similar situation to Volvo. If your a supplier who do you want to keep happy, yes both ideally, but it is a much bigger penalty if things go wrong at BMW.

I agree. I have been used to Mercs and Beamers gearboxes which had pretty good reputations. But the auto gear box on the S90 is really impressive. I find it responsive and gear selection very good...I heard it is designed by the Japanese.

The gearbox is an AW unit. A company that Toyota has some holding in and which supplies all Toyota Group automatics as far as I know. The model used by Volvo is used across many front wheel drive Toyota and Lexus car models. The in-line engine version is used by Audi in the Q7
