Thanks for all the suggestions. Managed to get them off by cracking them first with the breaker and then using a cordless impact wrench (which I bought yesterday).

I've never tried it though because the strut bolt removal method is so easy.

My best advice is to treat yourself to some decent tools, a wire brush and some proper penetrating fluid and the strut bolts will be no big deal.
No need to remove both. Just the top one and loosen the bottom.
Take measurements also because you want the strut to be tightened exactly as it was and not lose camber settings.
Wow, don't know how I missed this post with the invaluable advice in it
Anyone reading this in years to come, carefully note the tip to not remove both bolts.

I've just done this today and got away with just removing the top bolt and loosening the lower bolt. This didn't leave a lot of room to get the new ring on but just about managed with some twisting, turning and improvising with tools to knock the new ring flush into place. Hardest part was getting the bolts loose. Two garages told me replacing ring was unlikely to work and would need new driveshaft for £400-500.

Woah! I've done this job on both front driveshafts of my XC90, worked fine both times and the ring about £4!
I heated the ring to help get it on, as otherwise it would have meant lots of hammering!

Yes I ended up with the lots of hammering with various tools helping me get the force applied squarely on ring. I heated in an oven but not hot enough to make it slip on easily or perhaps I didn't file/sand the driveshaft enough but I was careful not to overdo it.

Why not removing both of them while there? I remove both of them then rotate the hub towards the front of the car (if I remember well which way) then the axle comes out like a puppy. I don't disconnect the tie rod end at the hub. When placing back the strut bolts press down on the hub with the knee - may also use a screw driver to lock the holes together. Don't forget to adjust the camber.
