Dealer did a reset of gearbox and it became a lot better as my car at some point was a lot worse than courtesy. Now it’s no worse than others and by no means terrible but it’s still there. I simply point out to the OP asking what issues as for some people this could be a big deal. The fact that many don’t even notice it shows how mild it is.

i can confirm all of the gripes posters have made on this thread although none of you seem to mention the shunt down into 2nd when pulling up to stop.
Overall i've given up on the xc90 now and just accept its unrefined 4 pot, rev happy "herdy gerdy put the chicken in the ooooven" nature. Can't change it till march 2020 so will just keep going back to dealer for a gearbox reset every 5-10k miles. |

I just realized both of you (Deman, jmot) have an XC90. Don't know if something was changed (firmware?) on later cars- mine is a MY18 and it's an XC60- and I swear I never had any glitches with the tranny. First time I hear about this shift down into 2nd when stopping too.

Perhaps it's not (only) the gearbox that needs a reset?

Like you say being a MY18 and a XC60 T5 might be the difference.

Another thing is your driving style, if you are the kind of person who rides the breaks through the corner you will not have it - I prefer to control my car with revs in the corner so I generally break a bit more into the corner and then ride the accelerato, not necessarily aggressively. Because the box is always in higher gear then necessary for economy reasons and the engine is not strong enough to pull from low speed/revs in high gear it always needs a change down. That would not be a problem had it not been so hesitant.

I’ve not experienced shunts when stopping, you can feel the shifts down when you coast to the standstill but that doesn’t bother me. The t5 was the smoothest I have driven, but gearbox still does the hesitation slowing down then reloading. It’s a bit less jerky too as it does it as power delivery is smoother then with deasel which lumps all that torque thrn moves on. I’ve been experimenting with technique and ESCoff mode but no luck so far.

Our MY2018 XC90 T5 doesn't do it either, it's smooth.

Auto box is as smooth as it is possible to be. All changes are imperceptable, I can only tell by the change of revs indicated on the tacho. This is the smoothest, quietest most relaxing car I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot of cars in my 52 years of motoring.

The gearbox is okay at higher speeds but can get clunky at low speed. Typical problem I get is approaching a roundabout at 10 or 15 mph and a gap appears so I accelerate into it. The car drops 2 gears but then almost immediately changes back up one gear. It's very noticeable and clunky. Occasionally there's also hesitation while it seems to decide which gear to use in this situation.
I hear what's being said about the adaptive gearbox but that doesn't excuse the behaviour. Neither my Lexus nor Merc did it and both of them had adaptive gearboxes.
