Brake fluid does not compress, so only a tiny amount has to drip out for the pressure in the pipes to equalise with the atmosphere, then, as long as air cannot enter the pipes (either using the clingfilm trick or the pedal pushed down so the seal closes it off in the master) the fluid will not leave.

A kind reminder that if the master cylinder is left emptying, air can get inside the ABS valve body unit which can be only removed by plugging Vida to the car and activating the valves in a certain sequence while bleeding at a front wheel caliper.
Note that the master cylinder has two sections inside the reservoir, one for each line, and these sections will not empty at the same time. We usually look only at the front section and disregard the rear section towards the firewall: is this second one is the one that will empty first while the front section may still appear to have fluid in it. Just need to bend over and look inside the rear of the reservoir, in case the fluid got low. If air gets inside the ABS valve body, it is possible the brakes won't have enough power and discs will have uneven wear.
