Default 850 Gearbox Oil

Save yourself some money!!!. After phoning a number of Motor Factors and my Local Volvo and Ford dealer looking for the best price for a 75W90 Full Synthetic Gear oil, and been quoted prices from £15 /Lt down to £11.85/Lt, I contacted Eurocar Parts. Their list price for this Oil, as specified in their book, was £7.60/Lt in 1 Lt bottles and £18.90/4Lt container both prices do not include VAT. Since I need to change the gearbox oil on two 850's I ordered a 4Lt and a 1Lt . Being cheeeky ( thriftfull perhaps) I asked for some discount and was quoted £23.51 icluding VAT. Since you need a 1Lt bottle because it has a spout to fill the gearbox, once emptied it can be refilled using the 4Lt container.

I'll repost this link to the Castrol site, which you might find interesting/useful.

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/castr...ategoryId=3205

Its sometimes a bit slow, depends on internet traffic.

EDIT,

Sorry they seem to have changed to address, but if you go the the UK home page from this 'error' page, you will eventually find a page where you can select your car Make from a drop down menu, then select model, and that gives Castrol's recommendations.
Sorry, the link used to take you directly to that page?

Default 850 Gearbox Oil

Alec,
Unfortunately I was unable to follow the thread on the Castrol page. But having spoken to a very reputable oil manufacturer who says that they have a direct equivalent to Castrol Syntrans, and it meets the same specifications. Also other oil companies will have their equivalents. The same oil is supplied by Castrol to Ford Main Dealers, that is according to the Castrol Sales Office today. As an aside, when I worked in the Central Research Laboratories for BMC, only Girling or Lockheed brake components and their respective brake fluids were used. Your car handbook warned of not mixing these two brake fluids or dire happenings would occour. What they did not tell you was that on alternate weeks a tanker of brake fluid from Girling was used on the production line followed by a tanker the week after from Lockheed. All brake fluid were emptied into thr same holding tank. As long as the oil used meets the specification that is laid down by Volvo then I would have thought that it should be ok. After all it is the recommended oil fron Eurocar Parts for the 850 gearbox.

Default 850 Gearbox Oil.

Apologies to all; Eurocar Parts have mislead me with regards to stocking the correct Full Synthetic 75W90 Gear Oil even after I double checked with them.
They rang me to confirm that they only stock the Semi-Synthetic version of this oil.
I am sorry if I have mislead anyone in the same mabber as I have been mislead.

Cool Re;manual Gearbox Oil

For M56 gearbox, Volvo specify their '97308' oil. Only major oil company that meets this specification is ELF with their 'ELF Tranself TRZ 75W80 ' Gear oil .

What about GSF?

98012 GEARBOX OIL-SS75/90 500ml GENERAL USE-SYNTHETIC BASE 3.45

That's £20.27 for 2.5L. I need to do a change soon, as my leak has mysteriously stopped... lol.

What does the group this of this? It's all well and good knowing about the Redline stuff, but there's the question of supply. I have a GSF next door to me...

As I've just changed my transmission oil in the 850, I thought I would just to add my little bit to this neglected thread, and hopefully help someone avoid following the misguided advice of using engine oil in their gearbox.

Volvo have never, and will not apparently reveal the spec of their synth manual trans oil - can't imagine why it is such a bloody secret - every other manufacturer I know makes it quite clear what spec oil they recommend!! Ah well.

A good bit of research on the subject prior to changing the oil does indeed reveal the correct spec is SAE 75w80 fully synthetic GL4 as Don and others have said previously.

A useful upgrade is a 75w90 fully synthetic, such as Castrol TAF-X 75w90 GL4/5, which meets both VW and Mercedes Benz standards, and is what we used - around £10 a litre.

Cheers,

T
