I went from a volvo 740 2.3 carbed petrol to a brand new 2007 toyota corolla 1.4 D4D.

The volvo 740 never passed a petrol station Always drank like a binge drinker. I would quess around 20mpg.

The corolla did 50 mpg very easily and was nippy and certainly never blew out any smoke We had it for 2.5 years and was very cheap to run and service. The only bad aspect on a new car is depriciation. A new car has to be a 10 year plan.
I would be quite happy with a diesel I disliked the car as it was uncomfortable on long journeys and used to drip water on the seats as you opened the door.

If I was living in the UK it would be petrol and run it on cheap LPG

LPG is very expensive here and there are very few retailers and so the conversion wouldn't be worthwhile.
