cylinder
in the engine bay on the opposite side to the windscreen wiper motor there is a cylinder with a pipe going under the engine? any ideas what it is?

Yep, it's next to the main pump on LH2.4 cars like your SE, K-jet has it on the firewall. Carby models either have none at all or a little plastic jobby on the feed line to the pump. Get ready to discover the highs and lows of mechanical fuel injection with the GLT! I remember putting my GLT into commission, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
