Volvo on call - do I need a sim card
I was looking on swedespeed and there was a post ref the fact that Volvo sell the card with a data sim in the car for Volvo on call to work....
What is situation in uk, getting my T8 in a few weeks, I'd assumed I need to provide a sim for the car, so that Volvo on call works and the wifi hotspot, so that the kiddies can mine craft or YouTube in the back. If I do have to provide a sim what size is it ? Normal or mini or mini-mini.... Many thanks |

On call works from a hidden sim in the car.
You will only need a sim if you also want to set up wifi in the car, but you can always tether your phone. Not sure if it's been upgraded in the new XC90 as mine is just a standard sim and it's only 3G (even if you put a 4g sim in there). Hopefully someone might be able to confirm it has moved with the times. |

You'd think that the XC90 would be 4G but I read somewhere that it's 3G. Hopefully they've reported it wrong. In any case, I'd probably tether my 4G phone rather than take out another data plan with an additional SIM.
When I moved from 3G to 4G I was genuinely surprised at how much better it was. I expected an improvement in speed (which I got in spades) but wasn't expecting how much better the 4G coverage would be (on Vodafone). Incidentally, if you're going to allow the kids to stream YouTube videos you'd better have a big data allowance. |

As the others have said, the answer is that yes, there has to be a SIM somewhere in the chain (obviously). This can either be a dedicated SIM you choose to plug in to the car and use it for that purpose only, or it can be the SIM in your phone which you link to the car systems while you're in it.
I'm not clear on the pros and cons of the two options: I'm sure there will turn out to be something really good about one which you can't have on the other, and something else equally good on the other that you can't have on the first. Just got this feeling, you know ... |

But you don't need to put a sim in the car to make Volvo on Call work
