Default Oil level unavailable

Hi. During its last journey, our V40's EML came on and the message it gives on the dash is that oil service is needed. Trying to check the oil level gives the message that it's "unavailable". Previous checks of the oil level have been fine. Anyone seen this before? Sounds like a dodgy sensor to me, but wanted to educate myself AMAP before contacting the garage. Thanks!!

Maybe some stupid Volvo protection so that you don't use the jauge to do the oil service yourself... I guess you will be able to read it again if you reset the service timer.
