Gear Selector
Anyone changed the gear selector thingy on a manual 6spd?
Obviously Police Road Craft doesn't teach mechanical sympathy as the ball at the end of the gearstick lever is worn, scored and flopping around in the "holder". Obviously seriously abused! This makes the whole stick loose and leads to wrong gear selection sometimes - particularly 3rd instead of 1st. I've bought the mechanism to replace the worn part but anyone ever done the change? Anything I need to be aware of or to watch out for? How easy is it to do and how much of the transmission tunnel console do I need to dismantle to do the job?

Can't help with the gear stick but trying to remove the centre console is a PITA. IIRC, Haynes recommended removing both front seat in order to do it.

Seats are easy to remove: just 4 bolts and a few connectors. Also means you can Hoover all the crumbs that get stuck down side of seat

Interesting. I've heard of wear on the ball and white dust collecting. (probably "charlie" in an ex-police car ).
Mine doesn't have obvious signs of wear (MY2011 D3), but the gear change is not slick like in many of the old P2 V70s I sometimes drive. I think the linkages are pretty cr@p on the P3 to be honest, but my dealer says you have to change the whole linkage "cassette" rather than just parts like the ball, or the cables. And it's a PITA to change apparently. I'd be interested to hear what you discover. |

My 2008 2.0d V70 also has a very unpleasant gear change
Not a patch on the P2 S60 I had before, the V70 is quite "crunchy" from the gear selection point of view. Does the silver trim surrounding the gear lever pop out? |

Yes it pops out quite easily, grab the gaiter and yank upwards!
