Default Petrol Smell when stopped

Hi everyone, and thanks for this site. Great help.
I have been smelling petrol every time I stop the S40. I have dropped the tank and found the problem.
Best way to describe it is in the accompanying pictures.
So my question is:
Is there a way of fixing this ? Or do I need a replacement part? And how do I remove this thing anyway ? I don't want to force anything untill I know I won't break it.
Thanks very much everyone...Any suggestions are much appreciated....

Go to volvopartswebstore.com and select your vehicle and head to the category called fuel or something. You will be able to see what parts of the fuel tank are available separately. If the part is not shown, I'm afraid you will either need to go with a hack or replace the tank. I hope that helps. Good luck!

As above. I think it will need a new/good secondhand tank.

If not parts then get petropatch its a fuel proof sealant for fuel tanks.

Hi everyone,
And thanks so much for your input....
I'll probably just buy some plastic repair and bog it up.
Much appreciated...Phil

I haven't come across this stuff before. Reading the technical info it states it is for the repair of ferrous metal and aluminium - there is no mention of plastic. Will it stick to a plastic tank as a lot of plastics are difficult to get anything to permanently bond.

You do surprise me that you've never heard of petropatch! It's been available since the '70's at least.Whether or not it's any good for plastic tanks I don't know as I've never had to use it on one,but on metal tanks it is indeed very good stuff.

I have genuinely never had the need to use it so haven't looked for a solution. Even my '65 Silver Cloud is still on its original tank without any leaks, so perhaps I have been lucky. That was the reason I checked the technical data and found there was no mention of using it on plastic. Now I know plastic can be a b*gger to get things to bond to it so just curious.

Thanks again everyone, interesting reading.
Just one more thing please.
I am changing the fuel filter at the same time.
One one of the pipes coming into the filter there is a valve which looks like a bicycle tyre valve.
What's this for please ??
Thanks again...Phil

I think it's to allow you to de-pressurise the fuel system in a controlled manner before breaking into it.
