Not necessarily - you have a definite fuel/burn issue so it shouldn't be too hard to nail down. Could be an injector overfuellimg too.

Forte Gas Treatment is a good shout.

Just manged to scrape it through the MOT today by the skin of its teeth which was a big relief.

However I will be in the same boat in 12 months time again :-(

Just to answer some questions above, yes air filter new, checked PCV with a glove on the oil filler and it was getting sucked in.

Car is driven by an older lady just local trips a few times a week AARGH

I took it up and down the motorway at 5000 RPM in 3rd for 20 minutes before taking to the MOT station. Plus I have been driving it all weekend with some vigour.

I did notice it took a long tome to warm up so a new thermostat might be a good call, however it did reach the middle of the gauge by the time it was at the MOT station.

Maybe a new set of plugs and some Forte injection cleaner would be a good shout for next year.

Does any one have a view on Cataclean ?

Did you give it an oil change as old, dirty oil can screw up your emissions.

Prior to MOT I also always run the petrol tank down to about 20 litres and then put in 500ml of standard automotive paint thinners and give the car a good spanking, getting it nice and warm.

Injector cleaners generally contain a blend of acetone, benzene, toulene, methanol and various other solvents which are carried in a kerosene base. For added interest the manufactureres may also include a dye.

Paint thinners comprises of much the same but are more concentrated. They also improve octane rating. You can also get a gallon for a tenner.

If you try and use it neat, instead of well diluted in petrol, the methanol in the thinners may damage your rubber fuel pipes but used diluted its not a problem.

Cheers,

Tony

Many moons ago, during pre-season testing at Barcelona an F3000 team, not usually at the front, suddenly hit the top of the timesheet and really grabbed everyone’s attention.
This was important because pre-season times can often make or break sponsorship deals and this young lad was hoping to snare a big one.

Maybe 25 minutes later, the same car came whizzing past me on its way into the pits at a proper rate of knots and he locked up all four as he dragged it to a halt; belts off and he was out, SCREAMING as he leapt. Liquid dripped from him.

It turns out the team had used an unhealthy (and obviously illegal) dose of toluene to boost the power of their car. The Lola 02/99 has a fuel tank just behind the driver which cannot be replaced without cutting a hole in the tub. Sadly, the additive melted though the bag tank which then ****ed high octane race fuel all over the Driver’s Thinking Sack which must have burned like hell even without it even catching fire.
The tub had to be stripped and sent back for a sheepish repair.

The moral of this lengthy tale is to NEVER put stuff in your fuel tank that you can’t absolutely vouch for. You have no idea what might react or melt or otherwise leave you sitting balls deep in something nasty.

I would sort this out next. Cool running will most likely lead to over fuelling and all that goes with that. The cat will not be happy. Even the glacial D5 is up to the middle after about seven miles of open road.
