I have no personal experience of so called tuning boxes, but they tend to work at a simplistic level altering the injector loading and are not particularly sophisticated. There are two reasons why someone might think they are a good idea compared with the Volvo approved Polestar ECU rewrite or a non approved ECU rewrite. They are going to be cheaper than the Polestar offering. Non approved rewrites will also be cheaper but will be erased every time the ECU software is upgraded on servicing while the Polestar coding is untouched. The tuning boxes can be unplugged when the car goes in for servicing but they will apply the crudest of changes and will not necessarily do more that slosh extra fuel into the cylinders regardless of the ECUs demands.

If you can rise to the cost the Polestar tune is the optimum way to go. I believe it also tightens up automatic transmission programming to cope with the changes in revs that it produces and it may alter the automatic shock absorber settings as well but I may be wrong there.

I had a friend who had 1 on a P1 S60 D5 (185 IIRC). We plugged it into mine and it didn't work. Not much more I can say really.
