Default 3rd row of seats -used for adults?

Hello,

I'm thinking of upgrading from my V60 to a XC90. One of the main reasons is the extra row of seats.

We occasionally take my parents with us on day trips, and that's fine at the moment with 1 baby, but when the next one arrives in a few months we won't fit in the V60.

With the XC90 I will need to use the middle row for 2 x babyseats, so that will leave 1 adult in the 3rd row.

I sat in the back of one at my local Volvo dealers today and expected a bit more room.

Have any of you used your back row of seats for adults? My thoughts are that it would be ok for a short trip, but not good for much further.

Dan

The rearmost seats are quite comfortable but it very much depends on how much legroom our passengers might need. You can slide the middle row forward to free up a little more room.

A bigger issue is access - users of the rear row of seats will need to be quite lithe. Another potential issue will depend on what you're using to secure the child seats. If you want to use isofix, then you must use the two outer seats in the middle row. If you have an isofix base in place then the seat won't tilt properly to allow access to the two rear seats.

All that said, I'll be bringing myself, wife, two young babies and my in-laws to France next summer with a reasonably big drive once we get off the ferry. Might as well test the car to its limits :-)

I've had 6 adults in my XC90 today. Two women in the very back seats though. It's cramped for men, I'd say, but absolutely fine for kids.

A couple of weeks ago I had 8 adults in it...

Watching very drunk adults getting in the rear seats is nearly as funny as watching them fall back out.......

It is worth checking the manual as there may be a maximum weight for the third row of seats.

Good luck if you have to tell the in laws to go on a diet if they want to come with you.

On a serious note deep vein thrombosis is not just a problem in planes. If the rear seats are cramped then this might be a problem without regular stops in France.

I have had 7 adults in the car for a 1hr journey. That's about as long as I would want to do. I would echo everything said above.

The grandchildren love them, especially if they enter and exit through the tailgate!

It’s has a lot to do with the hight of the person. At 6 foot I only just fit in the seats and wouldn’t want to go far in them however my eldest is the same height as my wife at 5 foot 1 and she is fine back there but we do move the middle seats forward a bit.

There are very few alternatives that give the same versatility as the XC90, I would not hesitate about buying the XC90, you will need to experiment with how/where you fit your child seats when your parents are with you, you could fit one in the front seat with airbag turned off to allow easier access to the 3rd row and more importantly safe exit, its unlikely you will get two child seats side by side using the middle seat, so other options are fitting one in 3rd row with an adult in the other seat or fitting one in middle row after people have climbed in to the 3rd row which means having to remove it before they can get out so the later two options are not very practical in an emergency, I think the safest option would be the first, one baby seat fitted in front passenger seat and one in middle row, leaving easier safer access and exit to 3rd row.

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Me and the wife went to the dealer today and tried out an XC90 with car seats and we were surprised how well it all fit in.

Now I just need to find one. The one I looked at was a 2013 D5 AWD SE.

I really liked it but need to decide if I want to find a higher spec one.

Thanks again for your replies

If you are looking at a late model car (i.e. '13 plate) then they're all D5's. Also in the UK all were AWD (unlike the XC60 and XC70 where you could get 2WD versions).
