Posted this but then when it rendered, I see immediately before it the Volvo instructions! And, they DO explain (at a high level). Thank you! Last edited by pasavage; Mar 1st, 2014 at 18:08. Reason: Found other great link from same user Gatos immediately after posting. |

fixed my door handle
The driver's side exterior door handle on my 2004 V40 broke so I followed the steps outlined in this thread to change it. Since I didn't want to pay the money for a new one or go through the hassle of ordering it and waiting, I fixed it. As you can see by the pictures, the plastic lever broke at what seems to be a weak point of the design. I drilled a 1.5mm hole which allowed me to insert a common thin steel nail which I heated before putting in, cut flush to the plastic and added hot glue to keep everything in place. Better than new. After 6 months still working fine.
Cheers. Jon |

Short answer yes, not a problem. Once you get the handle out, you'll see exactly what you need to do. The only tricky part (and it's not even that tricky) is having to slide out the spindle that allows the chrome piece to rotate. Some of these spindles have a little stopper grooved into the end so that it cannot come out by accident. If yours has this, its just a matter of gently grinding it off and then sliding it out sideways.

Hope you can help here..... how do you get the left rear door handles of a 2003 v40 out? I have the inside panel off and can see one bolt (the rear most through a hole in the interior skin) that hold the plastic surround to the handle, but the other seems inaccessible. the links higher up this post don't load and the others are for a front door. Do I need to take the crash bars out? thanks in advance. |

2nd option is to remove the rear metal window guide to gain access to the same bolt.

Crap - just re-read your note (rear handle not front). I'm a pro now with the front but I only tried doing the rear door once (long story). I too had a lot of trouble finding the second bolt. With that in mind, I'm sure Gatos is (still) correct but can't offer you any more advice than that. Sorry, man.
