Posted this but then when it rendered, I see immediately before it the Volvo instructions! And, they DO explain (at a high level). Thank you!

Default fixed my door handle

The driver's side exterior door handle on my 2004 V40 broke so I followed the steps outlined in this thread to change it. Since I didn't want to pay the money for a new one or go through the hassle of ordering it and waiting, I fixed it. As you can see by the pictures, the plastic lever broke at what seems to be a weak point of the design. I drilled a 1.5mm hole which allowed me to insert a common thin steel nail which I heated before putting in, cut flush to the plastic and added hot glue to keep everything in place. Better than new. After 6 months still working fine.
Cheers.
Jon

Any help would be much appreciated!
Short answer yes, not a problem. Once you get the handle out, you'll see exactly what you need to do. The only tricky part (and it's not even that tricky) is having to slide out the spindle that allows the chrome piece to rotate. Some of these spindles have a little stopper grooved into the end so that it cannot come out by accident. If yours has this, its just a matter of gently grinding it off and then sliding it out sideways.

Top marks for cleverness. Next time mine breaks (and it likely will given the poor design and multiple ice storms we get here in Toronto) I'm definitely giving this a try!

Hello PierreMcAlpine,

Hope you can help here..... how do you get the left rear door handles of a 2003 v40 out? I have the inside panel off and can see one bolt (the rear most through a hole in the interior skin) that hold the plastic surround to the handle, but the other seems inaccessible. the links higher up this post don't load and the others are for a front door.

Do I need to take the crash bars out?

thanks in advance.

You have two options here. \easiest is to carefully remove the plastic protective sheet and put your hand in there. You can feel where the 10mm bolt is and you can undo it with a spanner or a rachet spanner

2nd option is to remove the rear metal window guide to gain access to the same bolt.

Gatos is correct (as usual) - you need to carefully pry away the plastic and you'll have access to the second bolt (there are two). Best to do this in nice warm weather so that you can stick the plastic back on without issue. I had to use a hairdryer in 5degC to stretch it and get the glue re-activated. There should be no need to take anything else out.

Crap - just re-read your note (rear handle not front). I'm a pro now with the front but I only tried doing the rear door once (long story). I too had a lot of trouble finding the second bolt. With that in mind, I'm sure Gatos is (still) correct but can't offer you any more advice than that. Sorry, man.
