Cool Mud,mud, glorious mud.

As Paul (GVM) states, once the vehicle loses momentum you ain't going anywhere. So sitting there stationary, giving it more welly is only digging you in, and effectively making mud chocks for and aft of the spinning wheels, hindering your ability to move even more! So, anybody with you?yes? get the tow rope out (Paul will have a winch) us mere mortals can't hook it onto a tree,or if no trees, fix it onto the spare wheel and bury it. So if nobody with you? it's time to get the shovel out,you did remember the shovel! Don't go barmy and try and get out in record time, take it Easy!,you may be in for a long dig! Dig in front and behind the wheels, driven and non driven, and find some stones, branches etc. to put in front of the wheels to give you some grip and try NOT to spin the wheels. It may be easier to reverse and get a run at it and get through before you start losing traction. It is always best if in doubt of the way ahead,to stop and walk forward and check out what you are intending to drive through,it may turn out to be a mud hole!......... full of hippos?

P.S Don't do what I once did....... Ah there are signs of a tracked vehicle over there, I will go that way. WRONG! I didn't think of the contact area of tyres compared with tracks and sank.
