As an urban runabout they're ideal, regular long distance they'll still do it ok but I'd want at least an XC60 for that otherwise the X5's A7's and Range Rovers will think they can bully me at the roundybouts.

Meh.. this is about self-confidence - not the size of the car And that's coming from someone who "downgraded" from years in XC60 to XC40

Ditto, downgraded from V60 2 litre petrol estate to XC40. XC has all the space I need plus far more economical as well.

It kinda depends on what use it's going to have, if they just want an upmarket shopping trolley then an XC40 will excel, I'm bias cos I've always been a big car guy anyway, both big or small vehicles have their own strengths it's just if he's used to a V90 he's gonna feel like there has been cutbacks in what he's used to not meaning any less quality as such.
As I posted a little earlier, I do love my V90 but, obtaining more wrinkles per day than I like, and since giving up towing a caravan around, dont need the space the V90 offers anymore. Add to that the greater number of short journeys we seem to be doing these days, we all know that is something that diesel engines just dont like.
There is no way I would go all electric, rightly or wrongly, I am not convinced the world (and certainly not me) are ready for that.
So, something compact, comfortable, with plenty of toys, (I would miss mine) is being considered.
I have had 3 Volvo's to date so, at the moment, an XC40 is favourite.

Hybrid is where it's at tbh, full EV well when they finally start letting honest reviews through it'll paint a different picture to the one they show today, diesel is still the best all round fuel for everything, petrols don't float me because I'm a torque freak rather than an acceleration one, EV to me is eggs in one basket where a Hybrid that doesn't need plugging in is the best of all worlds, one that does is ok but the extra cost makes them less attractive as I don't feel they gain enough over a self charger, I guess at the end of day you're going to future proof yourself somewhat, good luck which ever way you go.

EV-enthusiasts would argue that it’s the worst of the two worlds - but I am with you on this one 👍

There of course is yet another alternative.
Keep my diesel V90.
Put the £20k or so it was going to cost me to change, in a pot, and use it to pay for any repairs over the next ?? years.
I might even have some money left for a posh headstone!

Ahahahahah 😂 All joking aside - with the current economic uncertainty - this may be the best option 👍

It all depends on desire tbh, do you want a new car? are you 100% happy with the existing one?

When I see ten year old S80's & V70's they don't look as old as they are, they still flow elegance to my eyes anyway.

If you are in your 60's I'd go for a new one, if you're in your 70's I'd stick with the old one, consider it's history, has it been reliable? does it still drive nice? if the answer is yes book a cruise and get your windows & kitchen done.

Hate to admit it but I have achieved the higher figure!
Up till now, I have changed my cars every 3 years when the warranty has run out.
This V90 I have kept for 5 without any problems.
With that in mind, your suggestion makes a lot of sense.
Hopefully we will still be able to afford and source diesel in the years to come.
If not, I will park it on the lawn in the front garden with a notice to read "This Is What Real Cars Used To Look Like"
