White Smoke?
Hi guys,
I have an S70 and recently did the intake valves in as the timing was out after redoing the cam cover as there was a leak. I had the valves done and put a new head gasket on with new stretch bolts, And made sure it was all TDC. But it now runs very badly and wont rev, And there is a load of white smoke, I think it might be oil coming straight through the exhaust, But i dont know why and dont know why there is no power and it wont idle. I marked the HT leads so the firing is the same, So i am lost. Any help would be appreciated. John |

White smoke is usually water vapour, and seeing as you've recently had it in bits your bad idle could be an air leak on the intake side of things

white smoke is water its possible u bought a bad head gasket, as for bad running i would say your timing is out, even tho u put marks on it what stopped the bottom pulley moving? is it ME7? if so u also will have variable valve timing

Not sure, The RAC guy said it wasnt running properly because i have a bad air leak in the intake manifold or one of thr pipes, Thats the first thing, He also said the smoke was the exhaust valves, I didnt think they had hit as there was no sign, But thats the problem, Dumping oil straight into the exhaust, So another 150 quid and that should be it.
I had the cams locked in so i know the timing on them is right, I didnt know there was a way to lock the crank, It was TDC before i put the head back on, I dont think i moved it putting the belt back on as it wasnt rumbling like the last time when i did the intake valves in. Just have to get the exhaust valves done and try to find the air leak, Then she might be back on the road again, I HOPE. |

As Simon (deathrider) has mentioned if your car was manufactured from 98 on and has an electronic throttle (no cable) then it'll be a ME7 and they need setting up by someone who REALLY knows Volvo's as the variable valve timing is a right royal PITA to do
General guide to exhaust smoke colour: White - water Blue - oil Grey/black - fuel NB Just noticed yours is a 10 valve so not sure ME7 is relevant

Found the air leak, Its just a hose at the end of the inlet manifold, Nice cheap fix.
