Stromberg issues.
Hi all,
My 145 has been laid up for a number of years and I've recently got it running again, however the throttle spindle is very stiff, making for a frantic engine shut down during the first run! Also, the throttle can't be made to close all the way, the adjustment screws are backed off but it resolutely stays open a few mm causing the engine to idle at 2000 rpm or so. I can't close the throttle all the way with my hand, it's like it's jammed on something. Has anyone else had this issue before? Are these carburetors known for this?

Loosen the clamp that joins the two carb shafts, and see if one carb or both is stiff. Check the choke mechanism. Clean and oil all linkages including throttle pedal etc. Check that carb diaphragms are in good condition with no splits and that they haven't started to go all gummy. Report back.

Hi all, quick update.
I finally managed to get an hour to myself and investigate the carburetor issues. The throttle spindle was still very stiff so I removed the carburetor and took the throttle apart, it was difficult to slide the throttle spindle out, it appeared to have partially seized. With a bit of persuasion and some penetrating fluid it all came apart. With all parts cleaned up and well oiled the carb was reassembled and the throttle butterfly now snaps shut with no resistance. The engine now idles at the correct speed and the throttle can be opened without the worry of the engine running away. I'm still not sure what was causing the throttle to be so stiff, corrosion between the throttle shaft and the carb body maybe?
