Default Rear seat belt advice

Hello

I have an offspring arriving in June and want to fit rear seatbelts and a child seat by then. I've read previous threads on this forum about seat belts, which seem to suggest that some welding might be needed on the floorpan, but the Volvo blurb AND the seat belt specialist I've contacted reckon all the fixings are ready to go. So I have three questions that I'd welcome your collective wisdom on:

1. Have other Amazon (mine's a '67) owners fitted seat belts and a child seat in the back, and how did it work out? What did you need to do?

2. What is the best way to fit the shoulder mountings without making a mess of the headlining?

3. Have you used specialist suppliers of 'nice' seat belts, and if so was it worth it? Is a DIY fit a realistic proposition?

Cheers.

Hi There,

I've fitted rear seatbelts to my 68 Amazon and used the ones supplied by Brookhouse. They bolted straight in to mounting points that were already there.

The one at the rear shoulder just needed a hole punching through the headlining and then it went straight on.

Not sure if 67 cars have the mounting points.

If you are interested I could take some photos of the mounting points later in the week for you?

Dave

My estate has Volvo belts in the back - all in original factory mounts. Lower ones should be the same as saloons:

Lower RH outer mount

Lower LH outer mount

Upper LH mount

Inner mounts

LH inner mount captive nut from underneath (propshaft visible in top RH corner)

Lower LH outer mount, after poking with a screwdriver. It had passed an MOT only a few months earlier, and before the screwdriver there was little that appeared wrong.... All repaired now though!

As for child seats, my car has been in the family for over 16 years, and at one stage had two child seats in the back. Apparently the fixed style belts (rather than inertia reel) were perfect for holding them as once tightened up, they weren't going to work loose.

Hi,

I fitted belts into the back of my 69 Amazon. The fixing points for the long end (the end of the webbing), the D loop and buckle were there already (7/16 UNF from memory). Have a look at the photo. The only bit that I needed to make was a mounting plate for the retractor. The hole in the parcel shelf was there so that the webbing could pass through to the retractor in the boot. If I have a chance tonight I will photograph the retractor mounting.

Hi DJS, that looks great. My car has fixed belts in the back. They work ok, but I would prefer inertia belts for the kids. I always wondered though where to put the reel without it looking awful. In the boot of course! If you could show more pics of that it would be great!

Morning Hugh,

Here are a couple more pics of my rear belts. You need to make sure that you put the retractor onto a fairly thick plate, say 2.00mm. This acts as a load spreader under the parcel shelf. Any questions, let me know.

Darren.

Not all amazons have the lower mounting point fitted from the factory. Infact other than the later amazons i have always had to weld in threaded inserts when fitting rear seatbelts
