Default Car parking fees for gas guzzlers

There have been a number of items on the news today about Richmond Council charging increased rates for 'gas guzzling' cars and 4x4's. If this goes ahead perhaps it will be emulated by other authorities. I am just wondering what criteria is used to decide which cars this applies to - 4WD, engine size, mpg figures etc? Can anyone shed any light on this? Ive done a google search but this didnt shed much light.

Ian

Ive just been watching an article on newsnight about this. One interesting statistic given was that if everyone in the UK stopped using their car tomorrow (thus zero car emissions) then at their current rate of increasing car useage the Chinese will cancel this improvement out in approximately 85 days!

It was also stated that in addition to modern 'gas guzzlers' (still not sure exactly what this applies to) cars older than 10 years with engines bigger than 3 litres will pay up to 200% more for parking in front of their own houses.

I suspect that at some point in the future when historians look back on this period it will be with a sense of bemusement at this sort of reactionary and illogical policy.

Well it was quite interesting...atleast 8 trucks per day are found to be dangerously faulty at Uk ports and atleast 20 drivers are ordered to stop each day by police...as the driver hasnt rested enough...the police and VOSA are powerless to enforce fines abroad and basically cant do much about the problems....the profit margins for the overseas companies are so big they can afford to take risks and pay the feeble fines if pressured enough..Vosa wants to introduce on the spot fines for truckers...but the very important thing thats Vosa stated is that they are undermanned and under funded..they cant always be there to protect the UK public..the police have argued their case aswell stating lives are at risk as long as these foriegn drivers are driving on uk roads..sometimes they could have driven right accross the country before being nabbed by police in Holyhead who despite being undermanned are pro active in reducing the number of dangerous drivers on our roads...they showed footae of a sleeping trucker who killed 4 people including 2 kids ...he denied ever sleeping in court and he just got 5 yrs sentence for death by dangerous driving...i know 3 very young children who were orphaned last year just before Xmas...driver was also asleep...

All the government would need to do would be to introduce on-the-spot fines for all continental drivers.
And then, of course, have more police, road checks... Have I been here before?
