Volvo XC90 - what to choose?
Hi
First post here. I'm looking to purchase my first XC90. I'm leaning towards the R Design Pro due to air suspension which I think is a must. I've narrowed it down to a couple of options. A 2018 R Design Pro Powerpulse £36k with 35k miles on the clock. A 2018 R Design Pro £32k with 63k miles on the clock. A 2019/20 R Design Pro £40k also with around 36k miles on the clock. I have a couple of questions: Is it worth the extra £ for the 2019/20? The spec seems to be very similar given they're all R Designs with only the Powerpulse being the difference. I've also heard from a load of people to avoid the air suspension as it was only added due to he fact that the ride would be unbearable with 22s without it. It's been suggest to just go for the R Design with 20s and avoid air suspension which generally break down and is expensiv to fix? I'm do want a comfortable ride so if the R Design on 20s is the same as the Pro with 22s then it probably makes sense to stick to the R design. Any thoughts ? I think I'm correct in saying that the 2019/20 is the newer shape although if it is, I can see very little difference and don't know if the extra £ is worth it? Is it worth going for the cheaper even given the miles are almost double? Any advice from owners? |

Original XC 90....
My advice would be to not buy a chinese car with a volvo badge on it but carefully consider the older, original XC 90. These earlier cars have the older 5 pot diesel and petrol engines with proven longevity and reliability if properly maintained.... not to forget the few fitted with the superb, silky Yamaha V8.
The later cars all have some version or other of Volvo's 4 pot engine. A bought in design that has been extremely troublesome and is best avoided. I have an '09 XC 90 D5 with 141,000 miles which has many, many more years of trouble free motoring in it.... Don.

Regarding your question on Air Suspension - I have been using a couple of R-Design cars on the larger wheels with lower profile tyres - the ride wasn't as smooth as I expected with air suspension. My Momentum with standard wheels/tyres and suspension gives a smoother ride.....

Air suspension is super smooth ONLY IF the car has every seat occupied with a large person and the boot filled with luggage, you won't get a smoother ride. However once everyone is out and you're driving it on your own the suspension will feel terrible. Stick with standard suspension, it's not as prone to breaking and when it does it's relatively inexpensive to repair in comparison
