The alternator or auxiliary belt is the danger if it breaks or derails. There are six pulleys on there. Any one could cause the problem but the alternator is the most likely followed by the tensioner/idler, followed by the a/c compressor.

Just phoned Volvo for some prices.
They've said they wouldn't change the pulley if they had a belt to change, they change the tensioner. The one that is attached to the alternator directly, that is the pulley? |

You can see a great how to video regarding the alternator clutch pulley on youtube by --sirobb,this will help you decide, also like already said it would be madness just to change 1 pulley without spinning the others by hand and checking for noises/roughness.

I will check all other pulleys and tensioners but as a must and a start I'll change the alternator pulley (the one directly fixed to the alternator) and the belt.
While I'm there I will check the other components. If they are ok is it worth lubricating the shafts etc? Not the bit the belt sits on but the drives |

Just ordered this
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F382589326669 That's the pulley that holds the danger? I'm aware it may not actually be this but if this holds catastrophic danger when failed I will start with changing this and a belt |

That's one of them.
When I get a new (very old) P2, I always change the tensioner and idler pulley as well as the belt and alternator pulley if it is in anyway suspect. Check the others by hand. For the price of the idler and tensioner, it's worth changing them whilst the belt is off for piece of mind if nothing else. |

The tensioner/idler unit is a separate part. It has two pulleys, one fixed idler and another moving tensioner pulley. Bizarrely they are sold separately for some reason.
The idler and tensioner have been known to fail. Spinning them with the belt off should give a good idea of their condition. |

When I was inspecting the belt and pulleys the other day I also noticed the contact surface on the idlers and pulleys seemed oily, is it worth spraying the surfaces with gunk spray prior to a new belt?
