Default Replacing rear springs 940gle estate

Hi, started to change rear springs on 93 940 GLE estate. No problem until I discovered that the spring seems to be held at the top by a bushing. Does anyone have a schematic as to how they are fastened on the top and how to remove spring?

From memory I though it was a stud in a captive bolt, then nut underneath. Undo the nut in the middle, either it should come off the stud or the stud should undo instead. Maybe mine just broke lol.

Eitherway undo the nut, maybe covered in mud.

What Tony said, nut on a stud, fiddley to get a rachet on but doable.

Have you got your new shocks and springs Luke ?

I'll be interested to see how you get on with the lowering as I'm tempted to go slightly lower when I do my suspension rebuild

Have a look at that thread Mark, i'm fairly sure Luke is in the process of ordering the springs and shocks.

As a poiint of interest and guessing you're closer to my age than Lukes, you'd probably find the B4 shocks would be better for you than the B6 from what i understand. The B6 shocks are more of a "sporty" feel and the B4 shocks, although "sportier" than the originals, are a bit more on the softer side.

Should be a bit more information there.

Cheers Dave

I've got new B4'S for the front so will be going B4 on the rears as well. My lowering plan was more aesthetic than sporty tbh.

While i'm on about it should I be putting in new springs when I replace shocks ?

Ps the clue to my age is in my user name

The springs have to come off to fit the front shocks Mark so may as well fit the new springs while you're at it.

On the back, you can change the shocks without changing the springs but as you've seen on the other thread, the rears come out fairly easily and the shock has to come off (at least one end) to change the spring so just as easy to do it at the same time.

No hard and fast rule but given that in both cases (front & back) it's just as easy to do the springs at the same time, i'd do springs and shocks together.

Little tip - once you've done all 4 corners, give it a few days driving round for everything to settle and then get the headlamp and front wheel alignment checked. Both will alter slightly.

Not yet mate, just doing my research.

I still need to buy 2 sets of polybushes for the front, camber/castor adjustable top plates, dampers, springs and rear axle polybushes. I will then use my 360 and fit them to the 940 over a couple of weeks, then do the wheel alignment at work (or I might pay someone depending on what mood my A hole boss is in).
