Thanks for advice.
Firstly - my car has the ignition coil and spark plug wires set up.

Secondly - my ETM looks nothing like the ETM that the link you gave shows?

As for the keys.
I changed the barrel years ago and had the chip from the ignition key for the old barrel put in the key for the new barrell and it started fine. To check for the chip having gone I took a spare original ignition key and held it on the antenna ring while cranking the motor (by using a screwdriver in the ignition switch which I had removed). If the starting fault had been the chip in the normal ignition key, with a different key it should have run ok but the fault still persisted exactly the same.

There are two donk sounds that come from somewhere on the inside of the firewall (far back below the dash on the steering wheel side) a moment before the motor dies. It sounds like a vacuum control closing. If anyone knows what exactly it is that makes this sound it may pinpoint the fault.

I also am considering if the fault could be the module that the key chip signals that then sends instructions to the ECU and motor to run while there is signalling from the key chip.

The troubleshooting chart advice was to test the ETM by removing and replacing a fuse and that you should hear the ETM click on and whine after removing and replacing fuse #2.
When I do this I hear absolutely nothing from my ETM? The chart advises that if there isn't any response from the ETM it could be a faulty relay in fusebox. But this is established by further testing that I cannot do coz the chart shows the plug to the ETM to have 6 pins and as best I can see the equivalent on my motor is only 3 pins. (i think the chart ETM is not the same type as mine)

Advice greatly appreciated.

Re. your comments about the ETM - if your car has coil and HT leads, distributor etc. then it does not have an ETM, just a normal throttle body with a throttle cable.

ETM = Electronic Throttle Module = no throttle cable.

However, that's most unlikely for a 1999 car, I thought they were all ETM and pencil coil ignition, are you sure about the ignition set up?

I have checked and it definitely is cable and throttle body set up - no ETM
The car is a may 1999 model

Thanks for confirming. OK, so there's no point in following ETM troubleshooting guides, as your car doesn't have one.

I sell systems and have a laptop and VCX tool ready to send out @£250 delivered. It could be with you by Friday and as Vida is already configured, you just turn on the laptop and it is ready to read the car within a couple of minutes.

I have seen this vcx tool is it the same as dice?> if so i might have to pick one of these up.

I dont think DICE works on a car this early. It used to be VARDIS, I had a copy someplace. A guy in Sweden was flogging them on ebay twenty years ago.
